Chapter Twelve

He blinked, the news sent a wave of cold down his spine. “What did you say?”

“I said they found a witness,” his companion retorted. “Kid didn’t name names, but she’ll be in to sit with a sketch artist and look at pictures tomorrow.”

Shit.

He clenched his jaw as he studied his blonde companion. The woman’s face was a mask

of irritation, though there was a hint of fear in her eyes. He could understand that himself. He had way too much to lose if this kid identified him.

“Wait. Who is this kid, and how was she—Joy’s daughter,” he said. “Joy said she wasn’t

home. I didn’t find her there.”

“Did you look or just assume that since she wasn’t making any noise she wasn’t

present?”

“She’s a teenager,” he snarled. “She’d be on her phone or something.”

“Listen to yourself,” the woman muttered. “Joy was an addict. She could barely keep a

roof over her head and her own phone on. Why would she give a damn about the kid having one?”

He pushed out a breath. “Where is the kid?”

“In a group home. I’ve already arranged for her to be taken by my contact in

social services. She’ll be killed in what will appear to be a car-jacking along with said contact.”

He nodded approvingly. “No loose ends.”

“My thoughts exactly, so we’ll have to deal with her case worker, Caroline Woodland.”

He frowned. He didn’t really know her well enough to have anything against her. Still, she was a thorn in his side that he wouldn’t mind being rid of.

“Yes. Make it painful but quick. The brutal murder will play well in the

media as well as Keith’s. Shocking how he escaped the needle only to die at the hands of a mugger.”

“Home invasion,” she said. “It’s on for tonight. He’s already made the new will to

include us. No one will suspect any of us considering we’ve done nothing but be helpful and supportive.”

He didn’t have to worry. He wasn’t associated with Keith publicly. Keith only knew him

in his official capacity as financial advisor.

“I’ll make sure you get your cut off the top even though I know you’ve already skimmed money. I think Keith knows it, too. He mentioned to his brother something about having an audit done. However, he’ll be dead before that can happen,” she said giving him a smile.

“Good. You think of so many things that escape me,” he told her, and she grinned.

“That’s why we’re in this together. I have dinner plans, so we’ll talk later. And be careful.”

He inclined his head. By this time next month, his revenge would be complete. Though it could never change the past, this would bring him some measure of peace.

Caroline finished up at work and was out the door by six. She headed home to change and was surprised to find her mother already seated in her living room with her tablet on her lap. Her suit pants were starting to show the day’s wear, but her blouse still looked crisp.

“Hello, Caroline.” Margret got to her feet, setting the device aside.
